Everett Spainhour

Fundraising for Everett S's Rifton Large

Due to his joint contractures, my son is unable to ride a normal bike. For the first time, in almost 15 years, we have finally found a bike that gives him freedom. He is desperate to be able to ride bikes with his siblings but unfortunately has had to sit on the sidelines since we weren't able to find one that accommodates his body.

We are so hopeful to be selected so he can enjoy the freedom of cycling with his siblings. Exercise is so important for him and helps build muscle.

I know I've been posting daily about this bike giveaway but let me tell yall a little bit about my son Everett. In 2008 my son was born with a rare condition called Arthrogryposis Amyoplasia ( a really long word for the baby didn't get enough nutrients in the womb and the body didn't form how it was supposed to) His hips were dislocated, he has no knee cap in his left knee, his arms were fused at his sides and he didn't want to eat. He had to have an iv placed in his head to help him get everything he needed. The doctors said he would never walk, never throw a ball, and would be wheel chair bound. He would be totally dependant on me and his dad his entire life. We named him Everett because the name actually means strong and courageous and he has held up to that name since birth. Despite having numerois corrective surgeries he has never let anything the doctors said hold him back or slow him down. With the help of many therapists Everett can now walk, throw a ball, run shirt distances, and will eventually live an independent life. While he can't join the military and serve his country (though if you know Everett, the marine corps because of his dad, that is all he talks about) I want to give him as many opportunities to fulfill other dreams. Everett is almost 15 years old and has never ridden a bicycle, and especially not independently. Chris and I have tried to come up with different methods of getting him to be able to ride a bicycle with no success, and so he has had to watch his siblings go ride and he has had to walk. Finally, his school therapist located a bicycle at the special needs children school in winston salem who offers a bicycle that is adaptive for Everett and not only can he ride it, but he can ride it independently. I have never seen my son look so free and light up as the first time he was able to ride a bike. The only problem is the price tag. Not everything that's designed for people with special needs is affordable and it's truly unfortunate because many miss out on so many opportunities. I have appreciated the outpouring of support, donations, and time taken by everyone of my friends and family and even strangers to vote, share and support him in this contest. Everett has also been so excited and appreciative of everyone and wanted to make sure I let everyone know. Thank yall so much. If you have not yet and would like to help you can vote, share, or donate at one of the great bike giveaway links on my page. You all are amazing!
